Chin Nose Surgery

There are many options to consider when combining chin nose surgery. Chin surgery can include a chin implant or sliding genioplasty. Nose surgery may include a rhinoplasty or nose job to elevate the profile or reduce a boney hump.

Rhinoplasty and Genioplasty

Rhinoplasty and genioplasty surgery can be performed at the same time. The advantages of combining rhinoplasty and genioplasty surgery are many. Rhinoplasty or nose job surgery brings balance to the nose. It can be performed in combination with septoplasty and turbinate reduction to improve breathing. The nasal valve can also be addressed at the same time in order to improve airflow resistance. Functional septoprhinoplasty is a staple of sleep apnea surgery. Patient presenting with obstructive sleep apnea whom have difficulty tolerating CPAP will realize an improvement in airflow pressure by 2 – 3 cm H2O after undergoing functional nasal reconstruction.

Many patients seek rhinoplasty and genioplasty to improve the appearance of their face. A concave patient who has midface deficiency and lower jaw or mandible excess as shown in the patient depicted can be brought into facial balance by rhinoplasty and genioplasty surgery. In this instance, augmentation rhinoplasty and genioplasty to reduce a prominent chin brings a convex patient profile to a normal or orthognathic profile. A concave facial profile can also be brought into orthognathic appearance after rhinoplasty and genioplasty. A patient with a prominent nose and recessed chin will benefit from rhinoplasty and genioplasty.

In the example shown, a convex facial profile is corrected by straightening the dorsal hump of the nose in rhinoplasty and genioplasty to  advance a retrognathic jaw (mandible) as well as correct vertical height disparity. Chin augmentation can be performed using a chin implant. A chin implant is a synthetic prosthetic which improves the shape of the chin in patients with small or recessed chins. The advantages of genioplasty over chin implants are many. A genioplasty can correct a small or recessed chin, not just camouflage a small chin. A genioplasty can correct an overly projected chin by sliding the chin in (posteriorly) and also correct a vertically deficient chin by increasing its length. In addition, the sliding genioplasty can correct an assymetric or a malaligned (displaced from its normal position) chin.
