Obstructive sleep apnea is a common disorder in the United States. Approximately 24% of male and 9% of females have obstructive sleep apnea. OSA is a treatable disease. Left untreated, OSA increases the risk for high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, stroke, and diabetes mellitus amongst other conditions. Dr. Jose Barrera, MD is a Stanford University double fellowship trained surgeon who is also triple board certified in Otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat surgery), Sleep Medicine, and Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Listen to the podcast on KTSA 550 San Antonio with Dr. Edward Staffel, DDS about obstructive sleep apnea treatments.

Dr. Ed Staffel, DDS interviews Dr. Jose Barrera, MD about sleep apnea treatments

Guest – Dr. Jose Barrera, MD.

Subject: 1) Triple Board Certified ENT and Facial Plastic Surgeon. Discussion on airway pathways of the nose and throat, and the seriousness of sleep disordered breathing, to your general health.

2) A must listen to program, for your good health.

3) Discussion of pediatric sleep apnea causes and treatments was discussed. Children with snoring, attention deficit hyperactivity disorders, and late childhood bedwetting or enuresis have associated obstructive sleep apnea. The cause may be large tonsil and adenoids.

4) Nasal obstruction from congestion and allergies may cause sinus infections. If patients fail maximal medical therapy, a balloon sinuplasty procedure or sinus surgery may be helpful. Patients with a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates, and nasal valve obstruction may benefit from nasal surgery to improve breathing. Breath rite strips may be of benefit to improve the nasal valve as well as flonase and nasal sinus rinses.

5) There are many airway surgeries which improve obstructive sleep apnea. A uvulopalatopharyngoplasty or UPPP may offer a life saving benefit over no treatment and CPAP in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. Maxillomandibular advancement is the most successful surgery for obstructive sleep apnea.
